Fair trade and ethical finance
"Fair Trade is a trading system based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade by paying special attention to social and environmental criteria. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions and securing the rights of disadvantaged producers and workers, especially in the South".
World Fair Trade Organisation, WFTO
The fair trade and ethical finance movement has a long history in the province of Barcelona. In recent years, and within the framework of promoting the 2030 Agenda, it has established alliances with other movements, such as the social and solidarity economy and feminist economies, to promote alternatives that place people and the planet at the centre of the economy.
Local governments play a key role in promoting these transformative economies. Through awareness campaigns, educational projects and public procurement, they promote fair trade and ethical finance as a conscious and responsible consumption option that connects local realities with global challenges and inequalities.
[+] 25 years of Fair Trade May
At Barcelona Provincial Council, we support the work carried out by both local governments and organisations in the province in this area, which continues throughout the year and reaches a key moment in May, when World Fair Trade Day is celebrated.
We support The Coordinator for Fair Trade and Ethic Finance (LaCoordi) in its campaign to promote fair trade and ethical finance, which offers resources and materials so that local councils and organisations can get involved.
This May, the World Fair Trade Month Campaign focuses on the ties between small farmers in the global South and North who feed the world while respecting the environment and labour rights, including those of rural women. A total of 279 municipalities are participating, of which 168 municipalities and 41 educational centres are in the province of Barcelona.
Throughout the month, there will be activities scheduled in different municipalities in Catalonia, which you can check out on the campaign website. Here you will also find this year's manifesto, which focuses on small farmers who promote agroecology and food sovereignty both in Catalonia and in countries in the South. It also focuses on our role as consumers in supporting this model of production through fair trade and a solidarity economy that guarantees the right to food, caring for people and ecosystems and ensuring decent working conditions for farmers and their communities.
As a result of the collaboration between LaCoordi, which is leading the campaign, together with the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, more than 205 libraries, 125 of which are in the province of Barcelona, and 8 mobile libraries throughout Catalonia will organise fair trade reading corners and/or storytelling activities.
Likewise, in this edition, 36 municipal markets, some fairs and local shops in the province of Barcelona will hold workshops on fair trade chocolate lollipops, fair trade games, exhibitions, among other activities to promote the campaign.
In the province of Barcelona, Fair Trade Month is the result of cross-cutting work between the Directorate of International Relations, the Library Services and the Trade Services of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
If, like the city council of the province of Barcelona, you would like to sign up to the manifesto, you can do so here.

- Municipal markets are a key agent in the economic development of municipalities. They provide citizens with fresh, quality produce. They are hubs that bring consumers closer together and, at the same time, provide a space for social interaction. For years, markets have been working on environmental values and progress towards sustainability. In line with this, since 2023 LaCoordi, together with the Office of Development Cooperation and the Trade Services of the Barcelona Provincial Council, have launched a joint campaign as part of Fair Trade Month. This year, 36 markets will be carrying out awareness-raising activities (13 chocolate lollipop workshops, fair trade games, 2 cloth bag printing workshops, 1 coffee tasting and 1 fair trade chocolate tasting) throughout the month, as well as a travelling exhibition that will be on display from May to December in various markets in the province of Barcelona.
- Libraries and mobile libraries: fair trade reading corners. 205 libraries, 125 of which are in the province of Barcelona, have joined in Fair Trade Month to offer readings, workshops and storytelling on the subject for young and old alike. This year, for the first time, eight mobile libraries are joining the campaign, making numerous stops in municipalities in Lleida and Barcelona, promoting specialised literature on global justice in reading corners and distributing awareness-raising materials, including a fair trade activity book that children will find in the various libraries and mobile libraries.
At continuation will find all the materials of communication to be able to spread the activities programmed at your township. They are material editable where can update and customise the information of your activities.
