XXXVII Jornades de la XML - Opening the museum, creating community
REGISTRATION OPENS ON 27 APRIL
In a context of cultural democracy, in which museums are redefining and seeking to consolidate their social role and relevance, participation stands out as an essential element in creating meaningful spaces for the community. The social museum paradigm focuses on co-creation, inclusion and sustainability. This is a growing trend that increasingly aims to engage the community from the very beginning of projects, ensuring that the museum’s vision is aligned with its surroundings and fosters a sense of belonging and welcome.
What channels facilitate an open and ongoing dialogue with the community? What internal changes are needed within institutions to foster genuine participation? How can we ensure that participation is inclusive and representative of the diversity of the territory? How can we move from one-off participation to a sustained and transformative process?
The conference will open with a keynote lecture by Ismael Blanco, researcher at the Institut de Govern i Polítiques Públiques and Professor of Political Science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. His talk will focus on the role of cultural institutions in building links with the community in order to foster social and territorial cohesion, as well as on how community-based and institutional responses can be developed at the local level to address the challenges of contemporary society.
This will be followed by presentations of various experiences from museums and heritage institutions related to the theme of the conference. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion moderated by Carola Castellà, Head of the Technical Office for Participation for Local Governments at the Diputació de Barcelona.
