Vies Blaves Barcelona
The Vies Blaves Barcelona are a continuous itinerary alongside the beds of the Llobregat, Cardener and Anoia rivers as they pass through the Barcelona area, designed to be travelled by citizens by unmonitored means and with respect for biodiversity.
The project, with an estimated global investment of around 100MEUR, plans to carry out actions along more than 250 km of paths to improve the route, bring it closer to the river and enhance the heritage and landscape resources of its surroundings.
La Via Blava Anoia phase 1, the section from Jorba to La Pobla de Claramunt, has been transformed into a public space for leisure, health and nature which has been open to the public since September 2025. The remaining sections of the Vies Blaves Barcelona are, for now, paths closed to the public.

The Barcelona Provincial Council faces the challenge of promoting active, sustainable, responsible and respectful tourism under the brand “Barcelona is much more”.
With the aim of increasing the demand for sustainable tourism towards the interior of the province, in 2015 it launched the Vies Blaves Barcelona project, consisting of the creation and adaptation of an infrastructure of itineraries that can be traversed on foot and with non-motorized vehicles around the Llobregat, Cardener and Anoia rivers.
The Vies Blaves Barcelona Urban Master Plan, an urban planning instrument approved in July 2020, established the precepts and determinations necessary for the materialization of the Project to develop with maximum integration and coherence with the environmental, landscape, cultural and historical values of the territory.
At the end of 2021, the Provincial Council presented the first phase of execution of this Transformative Project to the extraordinary call for Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans financed with Next Generation funds from the European Union through the “España Puede” Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which has contributed more than 70% of the investment planned for the implementation of the Anoia Blue Route phase 1, completed in September 2025.
So far, the works to create and adapt this first 19 km non-motorized itinerary have been carried out, the beautification actions of the natural habitats adjacent to the route, the information and environmental education signage, the urbanization works of the two entrance gates and the implementation of the active emergency management and visitor flow control system powered by autonomous energy systems.
Currently, the Provincial Council continues to work to complete the territorial scope of the Project, establishing new sustainable mobility connections between the municipalities involved and cohesively integrating the territory under the integrative criteria of the master plan. In the coming years, the deployment of transformative rehabilitation actions for this new public infrastructure will allow universal access to green, safe and inclusive spaces that contribute to boosting local economies from the respect of citizens towards the river, its environment and its biodiversity.
The Vies Blaves Barcelona project comes within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), number 3 "Health and wellness”, number 8 “Decent work and economic growth" and number 9 "Industry, innovation and infrastructures".
It is also one of the transformative projects of the 2024-2027 Mandate Action Plan of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
As such, its specific objectives during the current mandate plan are:
- Guarantee the execution of projects in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Monitoring Commission of the Urban Master Plan.
- Recover and rehabilitate 25% of the projected itineraries.
- Facilitate the continued practice of healthy leisure activities.
- Creation of new economic activities.
- Contribute to the safeguarding and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of the 121 municipalities in the area.

In the execution of the project, urban development actions are carried out that recover habitats and rehabilitate paths so that municipalities that have lived with their backs to the river can enjoy it again.
The paths have a standard width of three meters and a gentle gradient, with sections adapted for wheelchairs and segregated for pedestrians and cyclists, ideal for practicing healthy activities, sports, environmental education and leisure. They also have active safety systems, signage and environmental information.
The paths will extend through the fluvial area that includes the courses of three rivers, will cover 59 municipalities in seven counties (Alt Penedès, Anoia, Bages, Baix Llobregat, Berguedà, Solsonès and Vallès Occidental) and will pass through three natural parks, thirteen protected natural areas and eight tourist areas, being accessible to more than five million people. Connections will be opened with adjacent municipalities in order to improve daily mobility between them, installing barriers to deter motorized vehicles.
Along with the restoration and beautification of natural habitats, the history of the Llobregat, Anoia and Cardener rivers is being recovered to turn them into a valuable landscape, natural, cultural and heritage resource for tourism promotion and economic revitalization of the interior of the province that is committed to deseasonalization, seeking complementarities with sun and beach destinations and promoting rural areas. Thus, the Blue Routes become an instrument to redistribute the wealth generated by tourism and make it reach the destinations of the counties around this infrastructure, reinforcing territorial cohesion and generating new opportunities for job creation and people to settle in the territory.
