What are we doing to mitigate climate change in the province of Barcelona?

Reducing emissions icon

We have been reducing emissions since 2005

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is both a regulatory duty and an investment in the future. Since 2005, the province’s emissions have been reduced by almost half, amounting to 9.98 million tonnes of CO₂. The Barcelona Provincial Council supports the municipalities of Barcelona in this endeavour.

We have decreased energy consumption

The reduction in consumption in the province between 2005 and 2023 has been nearly 13,000 GWh. Reducing consumption also lowers emissions, cuts the energy bill, and helps tackle climate change.

Renewables are the way forward

Since 2005, the province as a whole has increased renewable energy production by nearly 4,000 GWh. Through the Renovables 2030 program, the Barcelona Provincial Council has contributed more than €160 million in municipal investment in photovoltaics, biomass, and efficient lighting.
